Dave is on the radio as we head down the road on the first day of our Nebraska Road Trip Who says Nebraska is flat? Rolling hills outside of O'Neill Crossing the Niobrara Our first stop was at the Nebrak Inn in Gross. Normally closed on Monday, we were greeted by 19 people having coffee and homemade cinnamon rolls! Mary Finnegan, the proprietor of the Nebrask Inn chats with Dave live on the air. Mary and her husband are the only 2 residents who live in the city limits.
93-year old Jake is a Pearl Harbor survivor and one of the longest living Gross area residents. Jim is the local law enforcement and gave Dave a ticket for Jake Break use and improper parking. The tickets are good for a free drink on our next visit to Gross. Jim is also the Parks Director because he mowed the lawn Park yesterday. We each were given a shirt that says Nebrask Inn on the back and "Gross, NE Lifestyles of the Poor and Unkown" Dave and Angie with Mary before we left!
Parking outside the Nebrask Inn in Gross Making out way down into Long Pine State Recreation Area. We heard it was going to be a tight squeeze down the trail. Long Pine Creek The squeeze was well worth the view...absolutely quiet, clear spring water running through the creek.
Angie decided to get into the water - it was chilly but beautiful! Airtime in Long Pine We have made it to Springview, the county seat of Keya Paha County. Donna and Aleta at the Springview Herald even took our picture and interviewed us for this week's edition.
11 miles northwest of Springview we stopped at the Ron Heertens farm for David to drive a really big tractor. No, this isn't the big tractor...this is Ron's dad Art's John Deere R that his family gave him for his 88th birthday Art Heertens Dave behind the wheel of the CASE IH Quad-Trac. Rod Heertens rode in the buddy seat to make sure Dave kept it under control
